Purpose and Calling
Isaiah delivered the sentence clearly: you are going to die, not recover. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall before Isaiah had left the building. What he said in those minutes changed the sentence. The question is why.
Rest and Burnout
The fire fell. The prophets of Baal were dead. Elijah had won the most dramatic victory in the history of the northern kingdom. Then he ran into the wilderness, sat under a tree, and told God he had had enough.

God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said: ask for whatever you want me to give you. Solomon did not ask for long life or wealth or victory over his enemies. He asked for a listening heart. The request changed everything that followed.

Shimei cursed David and threw stones at him on the road. David's men wanted to kill him for it. David said no. What David understood in that moment is the most underexamined insight in the entire Samuel narrative.

The text gives you the failure in one sentence before it gives you the details. In the spring, when kings go out to war, David stayed home. Everything that follows is the consequence of that staying.

David sat before the LORD and asked one question: who am I that you have brought me this far? Not a statement of gratitude. A genuine question. The answer God gave him was larger than anything David had asked for.

David's men said: this is the moment God promised you. David crept forward in the dark and cut a corner of Saul's robe. Then his conscience struck him. He had only cut the cloth. That was already too much.
Jonathan stripped off his robe and his armor and his sword and his bow and gave them all to David. He had just met him. The Hebrew says his soul was knit to David's soul. This is not a metaphor. It is the most precise description of friendship in the Old Testament.
Fear and Courage
Goliath stood in the valley for forty days and nobody moved. David arrived to deliver lunch, heard the challenge, and asked: who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? He was the only person in the valley asking that question.
Purpose and Calling
Jesse brought seven sons before the prophet. Samuel looked at each one and heard the same word: not this one. The eighth was outside with the sheep. Nobody had thought to bring him in.
Leadership
Saul was everything a king was supposed to look like. That was the problem. 1 Samuel 8-15 is not about a man who started well and failed. It is about what was always there, waiting for the pressure that would reveal it.
Wisdom
Samuel heard his name and ran to Eli. Three times before he understood. The fourth time he stayed. What God said was not meant for Samuel. It was meant for Eli. And Samuel had to be the one to deliver it.
