The book of Psalms opens not with a prayer but with a portrait. One word in Hebrew. A declaration about a person who has made a specific choice about where they stand. Everything in the Psalter follows from that word.

God asked Ezekiel if the dry bones could live. Ezekiel said only God knew. Then God told him to prophesy to the bones anyway. What happened next is the oldest vision of national resurrection ever written.
The writing on the wall appeared during a feast. Daniel read it: numbered, numbered, weighed, divided. The kingdom was over before the party ended. Daniel 6 is about the man who read the wall — and what it cost him to keep praying after everyone who wanted him dead had made it illegal.

The three men gave Nebuchadnezzar their answer before they knew how it would end. They said God could save them. They also said: but even if he does not. That sentence — spoken before the furnace — is the whole argument of Daniel 3.

Nebuchadnezzar demanded that his wise men tell him both the dream and its meaning — without being told the dream. Then he dreamed of a tree so tall it touched heaven, and an angel came down and cut it. Both dreams are about the same thing. The king was the last to understand it.

Samson killed a lion with his bare hands and told no one. He killed thirty men for their clothes and told everyone. He carried the gates of Gaza on his shoulders and left them on a hill. Then he told Delilah everything. The strength was never the problem.

Rahab had no reason to protect the spies. She had every reason to turn them in. What she did instead — and what she said before she did it — is the most unexpected confession of faith in the book of Joshua.

The book of Jonah ends with God asking Jonah a question. Jonah does not answer. The book ends. The question is still open — addressed to Jonah, and to every reader who has ever wanted someone to get what they deserved.
